 Thanks very much.  Actually, it really was xmaxima, which I had installed
 via darwinports.  I see that xmaxima is no longer among the macports.
 Though I initially had some trouble with it, I have now installed
 wxMaxima, which seems to be much nicer than the older xmaxima, so the
 problem has pretty much become irrelevant to me and, it seems, macports.
 But, I will remember what you have said about /usr/local for future
 installs.
