 Dovecot 1.1+ (current version is 1.1.1) adds the "layout=fs" option to
 mail location.  Setting this option will cause Maildir to create its
 directories without the leading periods in the directory names (e.g.
 ~/Maildir/directory/ instead of ~/Maildir/.directory/). (See

 Dovecot mailing list).

 I have used Dovecot to replace all of my bloated PSTs from Windows, which
 makes a huge difference in Time Machine backups, and makes my local mail
 available to both my MacOS and (virtual) WinXP clients.  Because of the
 leading periods in the directory names, Spotlight does not index maildir
 directories, which means that all my locally stored mail is not indexed.
 This frustrates one of the key advantages to using Maildir on a localhost
 IMAP server as a mail repository.

 I am not a coder, otherwise I would offer my assistance in upgrading the
 port.  Hopefully you wizards running these things can accomplish it
 without too much trouble!

 I really appreciate the hard work everyone does in making all the UNIX
 goodness available to us mere Mac mortals.
