 I resolved this problem for my own situation, but there may be an
 underlying problem (or, more likely, an underlying lack of understanding
 on my part).

 When I tried to install wxMaxima, gd2 was a dependency for this as well
 and installed without any problems.  gnuplot also installed with wxMaxima.
