 I ran into this "problem" too; turns out that I was blocking FTP at the
 firewall, and it's that FTP fetch from kermit.columbia.edu that's
 critical.

 I suspect that those of us installing kermit are slightly more likely to
 be doing so in some desperate network circumstance that needs a serial
 port - to, say, configure a firewall...

 Hopefully this helps the next person.
