 Just asked on the NumPy Discussion mailing list about whether installing a
 fortran compiler effects anything:

 essentially the answer is that it doesn't effect anything, its only an
 issue if you need to build against a LAPACK or BLAS that needs to be
 linked using a fortran compiler. We don't so I don't think that we need to
 have specific fortran compiler variants.
