 OK, thanks for the info about the flag.

 Note that the test program that I gave at the beginning for python/tk is
 still working.  This suggests that python may not be the problem in the
 tkinter case.


 I should also mention that I have had this all working under fink
 (currently disabled and archived), and so I don't think that there is some
 weird underlying problem in my system.  I will keep trying new ideas as
 they come up.
