 I'm not really familiar with [http://xquartz.macosforge.org/ XQuartz] but
 I know that wine works fine with the official Apple X11 on Leopard (and
 Tiger).

 Just to check the basics, do you have things in /usr/X11, especially in
 /usr/X11/include? If not, then I would reinstall XQuartz.

 If that's not it, then can you please "`sudo port clean --work wine`" and
 then attach the entire output of "`sudo port -d upgrade wine`"? I'd like
 to compare your configure output with what I see on my system.
