Comment (by ram at macports.org):

 The version of matplotlibrc distributed with matplotlib contains TkAgg as
 the default interactive backend, so that explains why WxAgg is used in
 preference to TkAgg. I should be able to commit this patch tomorrow,
 thanks a lot for your help in solving this.
