 Hi,

 Thanks for your reply.

 I've tried 'sudo port selfupdate' manually several times and each time it
 has failed part of the way through fetching the ports (got as far as kde
 last time and as far as python on an earlier attempt).  My firewall on my
 mac is open although I am connected to the net via a wireless bridge and
 an ADSL router.  What confuses me is that the sync seems to partially
 complete.  If that is the case then how can the problem be due to a
 firewall restriction?
