 forgot to mention that i changed the configure arguments to

 configure.args  --with-lispdir=${prefix}/share/emacs/site-lisp \
                 --with-auto-dir=${prefix}/share/emacs/site-
 lisp/auctex/auto \
                 --with-texmf-dir=${prefix}/share/texmf-dist
 }}}

 while i was trying to get preview-latex working.  not sure if this is
 necessary, and probably only valid if one has texlive_texmf-full
 installed, if i understand things correctly.
