 Ok, the verdict is that this is a bug in MySQL, introduced in 5.1.23-rc,
 and it will be fixed in 5.1.24-rc. As mentioned above, see
 [http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=44137 PHP bug 44137] and especially
 [http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=34655 MySQL bug 34655]. Until MySQL
 5.1.24-rc is released, I'll add a patch to mysql5-devel to fix this, based
 on [http://lists.mysql.com/commits/43168 their fix]. See also #14579.
