 Ticket #13396 describes a similar problem, and it was caused by a
 "/usr/X11R6 1" directory, which is suspected to be a leftover from a dodgy
 installer which renames an existing to this path including the space. I
 deleted this directory-with-space and now everything builds correctly.
 Hopefully this was it.
