 I'm having the same trouble.  I peaked into configure.in and other files
 in the source directory, and it appears that 2.3.11 is only equipped for
 powerpc-apple-darwin, not i386.  I don't know if the configuration can be
 patched or if going to 2.4.0 will help (I'm trying out the latter right
 now).
