 This sort of thing has been suggested and tried before (for smoothing over
 port name changes, for instance) but there are some problems with running
 two instances of port simultaneously (and base/ wasn't designed for this -
 so it would probably take as much effort or more to make this work right
 as it would to make base/ support what needs to be done in a less hackish
 way).
