New description:

 teTeX-3.0

 the error log can be found here:

 carson at mackie:/tmp$ dvipdfm haptic_radar.dvi

 haptic_radar.dvi -> haptic_radar.pdf
 [1(./Prototype_BandAndModule.eps<PS>zcat: ./Prototype_BandAndModule.eps.Z:
 No such file or directory
 )]
 94217 bytes written

 A testcase can be downloaded here:

 http://bentham.k2.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/media/bugs/testcase.tar.gz

 This contains a .dvi which references an included .eps file.

 Description: when translating .dvi files referencing an .eps file, dvipdfm
 and dvipdft encounter errors. The programs appear to try to find a
 compressed version of the eps, and exit after producing a image-less pdf
 file.

 Comments: I am unable to reproduce this problem on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, which
 has the same version of dvipdfm (version 0.13.2.c). This leads me to
 suspect it is a macports specific bug. This problem was also reported
 here: http://www.mail-archive.com/bug-auctex@gnu.org/msg00402.html
