 This is not quite what I thought. I've been testing various options and it
 turns out it's not .wmv files specifically, but it's that mplayer crashes
 if I have mute on at the end of file of the last file played regardless of
 codec (only tried .wmv and .mpg)

 Sorry for the confusion. Turns out the .wmv files I tried all had
 obnoxious sound tracks so of course I muted them...
