 Sorry, don't have a 10.4 machine available. Can only say building 0.17.1
 on 10.5 worked just fine (for me).

 Just to find the problem: can you download the exiv2 0.17.1 source and do
 a

 ./configure
 make

 just to see if that builds for you?
