 I'm also experiencing this problem, and it appears to be related to an
 inability to specify the Header font in the preferences pane.  In
 particular, going to "preferences" and attempting to choose a "Header"
 font signals this error:

 ** (gnumeric:31326): CRITICAL **: go_format_ref: assertion `gf != NULL'
 failed

 ... which suggests that 'gf' contains a reference to the header font, and
 that it's not currently set.
