 Steps to reproduce:

 (infinitely)

 Doesn't happen with, e.g., latin1 input. It doesn't matter whether the
 locale is UTF-8 or not.

 i686-apple-darwin8-gcc-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5250)
 }}}
 (I'm a DarwinPorts newbie; is this the gcc that DarwinPorts uses? If not,
 how can I find out?)
