 This problem still exists with macports 1.6.0 and OS X 10.5.5 (intel).
 xfig 3.2.5.  exact error message upon starting xfig:

 "Either you have a very old app-defaults file installed (Fig), or there is
 none installed at all.  You should install the correct version or you may
 lose some features.  This may be done with 'make install' in the xfig
 source directory."

 Going to the xfig source directory in
 /opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/ports/graphics/xfig/files
 does not help; make install does nothing there.

 The XAPPLRESDIR suggestion above did work to fix the problem.  Can the
 port take care of this by default, perhaps by hardcoding by default?

 Does this affect any other X11 apps?
