Comment:

 So it sounds like you're following the instructions in the
 [wiki:ProblemHotlist#a.profilenotsetup ProblemHotlist]. As it says there,
 you should ignore the permissions errors that get printed out; they are
 normal. You should manually run "sudo port selfupdate" next, to update
 MacPorts and your ports tree.

 Since it still couldn't find the port command, either the .profile did not
 get set up (not sure why that would be), or you did not close your
 Terminal window and open a new one, which you need to do to get the
 .profile to be read.

 If even that doesn't work, please show us what is in your .profile now.
 Also please tell us what version of Mac OS X and Xcode you have and on
 what kind of Mac.
