 The message
 {{{
 checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C
 compiler cannot create executables
 }}}
 usually indicates Xcode is not installed, since MacPorts builds from
 source it is needed.

 Can't say about the gcc43 error, looks like the actual error message was
 probably lost without debug output.  Using {{{sudo port -d install
 gcc43}}} should reveal the actual error.
