 Well, I've got xemacs and gv running now. This is what I did (although I
 really have no idea which of these things did the trick):

 1) Completely uninstalled MacPorts.

 2) Made sure I had the latest versions of Xcode (3.1.2) and X11 (2.3.2.1)

 3) Made sure X11 was running before I installed everything.

 4) Installed, in this order: coreutils +with_default_names, texlive, gv,
 xemacs, ispell
