 Mac OS X 10.4.11 on an Intel MacBook, with MacPorts 1.710.

 The command:

 play <any sound file>

 used to work. Now it results in the following sequence of events:

 1. The speaker makes a weird clunking noise.

 2. sox displays the sound file metadata in the usual way.

 3. sox sets up the "progress bar" line.

 4. segfault.

 I re-installed sox after upgrading all dependencies;
 same result.

 I suspect this may have something to do with the recent
 update to iTunes that was pushed to my computer by
 Apple.
