 I was able to install py25-mayavi with the following workaround:

 {{{
 sudo port -n install py25-mayavi
 }}}

 This is due to base bug #2377.

 Also, the python variant of vtk5 is needed to build. So here is the proper
 command to install vtk5:

 {{{
 sudo port install vtk5 +carbon +python -tcltk -x11
 }}}
