 Ok. after investigating this further one way to solve this is to rewrite
 the portfile to detect which arch the machine is running and patch the
 makefile.pre.in accordingly.
 This is a bit of work with tho.

 The other way would be to build a universal binary with both i386 and
 x86_64 as that would sidestep that check altogether,
 also this would probably be pretty easy to do.

 Anyone else got anything?
