 I have a pretty lame work around for this:

 Edit /opt/local/etc/macports/macports.conf and change "universal_archs" to
 just be "i386"
 Then build using:
 {{{
 root at macbookpro ~# port clean synergy ; port install synergy +universal
 }}}
