Comment:

 Strange, the problem seems to have vanished when I installed all the
 backends as opposed to only +qt4. Or maybe it is transient because i
 thought it failed when i first tried it after installing everything. In
 any event, I will consider this problem gone. The qt4 examples did work
 for me too. Thanks for checking.
