 With whois 4.7.37, I get:
 {{{
 $ whois --version
 whois: illegal option -- -
 Usage: whois [OPTION]... OBJECT...
 [...]
       --verbose        explain what is being done
       --help           display this help and exit
       --version        output version information and exit
 }}}

 This bug is specific to Mac OS X (no such problem under Linux with the
 same version). The attached patch (whose goal is to use getopt) solves the
 problem on my machine.
