 I'm thinking that maybe the "configure.cflags-append" and "configure
 .ldflags-append" MacPorts commands should be used instead of setting
 EXTRA_CFLAGS and EXTRA_LDFLAGS. As in:

     configure.cflags-append  '${configure.universal_cflags}'
     configure.ldflags-append '${configure.universal_ldflags}'
 }
 }}}

 I haven't tested this, though, so that should probably be tested before
 committing.
