 Given that nobody has reported this before I'd lean towards it being a
 problem specific to your system. This is what gnutar looks like on my
 10.5.8 system:

 $ gnutar --version
 tar (GNU tar) 1.15.1
 $ ls -l /usr/bin/gnutar
 -rwxr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  413248 Jun 18  2009 /usr/bin/gnutar
 $ file /usr/bin/gnutar
 /usr/bin/gnutar: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
 /usr/bin/gnutar (for architecture i386):        Mach-O executable i386
 /usr/bin/gnutar (for architecture ppc7400):     Mach-O executable ppc
 }}}
