 Actually that patch is not enough to get freetype working. I get errors:

 /Users/truk/.mgprc:1: warning: directive "tfdir" not supported in this
 configuration
 nycbsdcon08.mgp:1: warning: directive "tfont" not supported in this
 configuration

 Also the config output shows:
 ...
 checking if freetype1 is used... yes
 checking for freetype1 library/header... no - not using freetype
 checking if Xft2 is used... yes
 ...

 probably the configure test needs to be patch too.
