New description:
The mpich port builds without errors, but fails to install a number of
python scripts in /opt/local/bin. Programs like mpirun and mpiexec are
symbolic links to these scripts.
Even after I copy these scripts by hand, I still can't my programs to
start. Is there some daemon process that I need to start first? Openmpi
works without any issues (so far), so I'll stick to that implementation
for now.

Comment:
mpich2 as of 1.0.8 installs the various python scripts without issue (also
note you would need to run mpd to use mpich2 tools).
