Comment:

 From the above error it looks like theres something wrong with your
 compiler. The port now uses the muniversal PortGroup for the universal
 variant, can you test again?

 If you get the error again, can you attach the full build log, i.e.:

 {{{
 $ sudo port clean fftw-3
 $ sudo port -d install fftw-3 +universal > fftw-3.log
 }}}
