 Oddly enough, the installation worked after about 10 repetitions of:

 {{{
 $ sudo port clean sshfs
 $ sudo port install sshfs
 }}}

 What kind of rubbish is cleaned out during the n-th invocation of {{{ port
 clean }}} which was not cleaned out the first n-1 times?

 Strangeness abounds.
