 That was the version I downloaded yesterday and have been since struggling
 with.

 So I have duly installed MacPorts 1.7 for 10.5 and now it is happily
 building ImageMagick without any obvious problems.  I would consider this
 case closed (modulo ticket 13141).

 Many, many thanks for taking the time to figure out this rookie error.
