Let's wait for some feedback before closing this ticket though.

Well I was having the same problems as in
[http://trac.macports.org/ticket/16755] after switching from (a working)
X11 version of gnucash 2.2.28 to the quartz version (using the
instructions found in [http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/MacOSX/MacPortsDetail]
to first uninstall the X11 version
$ sudo port uninstall --follow-dependents cairo
$ sudo port uninstall --follow-dependents dbus
), then reinstalling gnucash with the changes to
/opt/local/etc/macports/variants.conf and add the following four lines:
+no_static
+no_x11
-x11
+quartz
-----------------------------
I did this just before the [http://trac.macports.org/changeset/45725] was
posted above; I encountered the problems outlined in
[[http://trac.macports.org/ticket/16755]]. This was with dbus @1.2.12_3;
I then found this thread and did an 'upgrade' to dbus to @1.2.12_4
(confirmed as active), but my original problem still exists.
I am running MAC OS 10.5.6 (IMAC INTEL CORE 2)
Perhaps I need to completely blow away macports and try anew. At the
moment, I am reverting (hopefully) back to the X11 variant.
[UPDATE: x11 variant just rebuilt, but my problems now remain; it appears
to be a something to do with GCONF so I'm going to blow everything away
and start over]
