 I'm just guessing but is it possible that vxl is building using its own
 internal copy of ffmpeg (many ports
 do) which is not compatible with our installed version and it is looking
 for include files/libraries in
 the MacPorts system path before it looks for the ones that are local to
 vxl?

 This would explain why it builds when port ffmpeg is not present.
