 Note, as a potential work-around, I attempted to install the binaries from
 the http://www.haskell.org/ghc directory for Leopard PPC (the binary from
 Michael Witten). The ghc binaries install fine but when I try to
 subsequently install cabal-install I get this error message (after trying
 to run ./bootstrap.sh). Seems like this error and the port install error
 might be related...

 cabal-install-0.6.2 $ ./bootstrap.sh
