 Yes, it did fix the issue. I downloaded the
 MacPorts-1.7.1-10.5-Leopard.dmg image, ran the installer, and restarted
 Terminal and X11 (just to make sure). Thanks!

 P.S. I did search tickets briefly for answers, but #19035 didn't come up
 in the search. Oops.
