 this one from Xquartz]? It says it requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later so I
 would not expect that to work on Mac OS X 10.4.11.

 Ports in MacPorts should now be using the version of X in MacPorts (from
 xorg) instead of the system's X11. This was a recent change so it's
 possible some ports have not yet made this transition.

 I didn't have any trouble with wine 1.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.4.11 when I
 updated the port to that version last year. However, a much newer
 development version of wine is available in the wine-devel port (currently
 version 1.1.21) so you may want to try that.
