 Thanks, Ryan. I had to modify your patch for the CC and CXX settings,
 though, because the Makefile does not honour the environment variables. I
 ''did'' change the compiler to `depends_lib` and the put the `build.args`
 into the `pre-build` stage.

 attached. (Forgot to check "replace with same name"!)
