 I know that this isn't the answer that anyone is looking for (including
 myself), but in order to do my AVR programming, I just installed a linux
 distro in a VM container on my mac. It worked great. It definitely would
 be much easier to be able to do it on my mac, but in a pinch, it worked
 for me.

 I do appreciate the time and effort put into maintaining all the various
 ports in Macports. It makes my life a whole lot easier. I look forward to
 having avr-gcc working again soon. Thanks!

 I'd be happy to help with additional reports as well.
