 I think physfs has some example that requires libreadline, but install the
 libraries from macports should build with --disable-readline. It's
 particularly important on Os x 10.6 because readline depends on ncurses,
 and the default ncurses found by gcc will be the OS x one, which does not
 have a 64 bit version.
