 OK, I now reinstalled Xcode, reinstalled MacPorts and then uninstalled and
 cleaned all ports.
 The error is still the same, this is how I did this:

 {{{
 sudo port clean all
 sudo port -f uninstall installed
 sudo port install python26
 sudo port install py26-matplotlib
 }}}
