 Nothing particular, it' just to save a little disk space and build time.
 I doubt that many users have any ext2 file systems on their Mac, thus no
 use for ext2 specific utilities.  Granted, with the advent of Intel Macs,
 NTFS is probably not that uncommon.

 Or are you asking why they are not enabled by default?  That would be fine
 with me.
