 You should be able to upgrade to MacPorts 1.6 or so on Darwin, but that's
 the end of the line.
 (the GNUstep requirement is unused, and can be patched out in the earlier
 versions of base)

 Unless having a historical interest in old Mac OS X versions, I'd suggest
 moving to FreeBSD ?
