 For what it's worth, I just ran into this today as well.  I'm on Mac OS X
 (Client) 10.4.11. I was convinced it was cruft gathered from many years of
 MacPorts use, so I took these steps:

 1) upgraded to the latest XCode for Tiger (v2.5)
 2) rm -r /opt
 3) installed a fresh copy of MacPorts 1.8.1

 $ gcc -v
 Using built-in specs.
 Target: powerpc-apple-darwin8

 4) sudo port install mplayer

 $ sudo port install mplayer
