 Thanks for this tip. These are my changes to the portfile:

 * added "--enable-apple-64bit" when building on snow leopard.
 * diskspace reduction using --enable-shared
 * added mpi variant for darwin 9-10 where openmpi is installed per
 default.
 * compiles using system gcc on snow leopard.

 Tested on 10.6.1, only.
