 On i386 the configure script says

 No shared library support; try without defining CC and CFLAGS
 }}}
 whereas on x86_64 it says
 {{{
 Checking for shared library support...
 Building shared library libz.1.2.3.dylib with /usr/bin/gcc-4.2.
 }}}
